What You Need to Know About Edible Cannabis as A Newbie Smoker

    By JakeAugust 3, 2022No Comments5 Mins Read

Cannabinoids are present in edible cannabis products, which are ingested or consumed orally. Cannabinoids are chemical components present in cannabis that, when eaten, can have psychological and physiological effects. For example, the cannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) induces euphoria and drunkenness (or high).

CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that may have medicinal effects, though further research is required to establish this, and there are several edible cannabis products on the market. Although some cannabis-infused edibles may resemble common foods, they are not food and are not meant to give a nutritional benefit.

Eating cannabis products is a healthier alternative to smoking and vaping. To try edible cannabis, you should know the six things listed below.

6 Things You Should Know About Edible Cannabis

Make Sure to Read the Label Thoroughly

Edible cannabis products vary significantly in appearance, composition, and THC and CBD levels. Before consuming cannabis-infused edibles, always read the label. If you’ve never eaten cannabis or are new to it, start with 2.5 mg of THC and wait for the effects before increasing the dosage.

Additionally, it may be beneficial to investigate how THC and CBD affect the brain and body and how these effects alter between inhaling and ingesting cannabis. Finally, remember that certain edible cannabis products may have expiration dates and include allergenic components.

Consuming Cannabis Lasts Longer than Inhaling It

Due to the time it takes for the body to absorb THC from edible cannabis, THC stays in the body longer than when smoking or vaping cannabis. As a result, the results can persist for up to 12 hours, while the lingering effects might last up to 24 hours.

If you’re new to edibles or cannabis, experiment with them in a safe, comfortable setting with friends or acquaintances who are seasoned users. Make travel arrangements or prepare to spend the night if you intend to consume edible cannabis at a friend’s or relative’s home. After consuming cannabis, do not operate heavy machinery or drive.

It Requires Time to Feel the Full Effect

The duration of edible cannabis’s “high” or intoxicating effects ranges from 30 minutes to two hours, with a maximum of four hours. The results can last up to 12 hours, with residual effects lasting up to 24 hours, so you may still be affected the next day. In contrast, cannabis smoking or vaping results are felt within seconds or minutes and peak within thirty minutes.

THC enters the bloodstream and brain after passing through the stomach and liver when cannabis is consumed orally. This varies from person to person, making it difficult to predict when you will feel the full effects of edible cannabis. Because the full effects of cannabis can take up to four hours to be felt, consuming more during this time can result in an overdose. Anxiety and panic, nausea and vomiting, and psychotic behaviour are all symptoms of excessive intoxication (paranoia).

    Maintain Appropriate Marijuana Cannabis Storage

Cannabis-infused chocolates and brownies appear identical to those that do not contain cannabis. In other words, they appeal to both children and adults. Unfortunately, consuming edible cannabis by children and animals is more common than you might think and can lead to serious health consequences.

If you have edible cannabis in your home, including homemade edibles, make sure it is properly labelled, stored in child-resistant containers that are resealed after use, and kept out of sight and reach of children and pets. It is also a good idea to buy or make your lockbox. Finally, if you or someone you know has inadvertently consumed cannabis and is feeling ill, contact your local poison control center or seek medical attention.

    Never Mix Alcohol and Cannabis

The intoxicating and debilitating effects of cannabis are heightened by alcohol. Therefore, combining cannabis and alcohol significantly increases the risk of over-intoxication and impairment. As previously stated, a cannabis overdose can cause anxiety, panic, nausea, vomiting, and paranoia.

Avoid combining cannabis and alcohol to reduce your chances of experiencing these adverse effects. Furthermore, do not mix cannabis with nicotine or any other intoxicating substance, including stimulants (“uppers”) and depressants (“downers”), as this can have serious health consequences. If you are taking or plan to start taking prescription medications, consult your doctor to see if cannabis will interact with them.

    Cannabis Use Affects Mental Health

Daily or near-daily cannabis use increases the risk of addiction and can induce or exacerbate anxiety and depressive disorders. In addition, regular use of cannabis products containing high amounts of THC can increase the risk of psychosis, mainly if psychosis or schizophrenia runs in the family. These facts are meant to help you evaluate the risks associated with cannabis usage and make a more informed decision.

Choose products with no more than 100 mg/g (10 percent) of THC for inhalation and no more than 10 mg for ingestion to lower your risk of mental health problems. Additionally, limiting your cannabis usage can help mitigate these risks.
