If you want to progress from singing into a hairbrush in front of a mirror, to performing in front of huge crowds of adoring fans, you’d better first: ask yourself if you’ve got what it takes to become a star (i.e. can you sing, and will people want to listen to you?), and then start following the 6 steps below:
1. Practice your vocal technique
To be like the world top 10 singers, you’ll have to work, and work pretty hard. You’ll need to practice, practice, and practice some more. Even if you already sing in front of small audiences, you can never stop practicing and honing your vocal techniques. This can help keep your voice fresh and appealing, and your vocal chords in shape.
2. Care for your vocal chords
The instrument that’s going to help you achieve fame as a singer, is a muscle not an instrument, and as such, requires ongoing exercise and protection from injury. Learn how to sing (and scream and shout!) without damaging your vocal chords, and if necessary, seek professional guidance on how best to care for your voice.
While your ability to sing may be a natural talent, you will still need to preserve that talent with the right kind of care.
3. Practice with a vocal coach
As mentioned briefly above, it can be helpful to seek guidance from a professional vocalist, who can teach you proper vocal techniques and help you combat any problems you may be facing. It may be that they can help you learn how to rest between performances or practice sessions, or how to get the most out of your voice when on stage, without damaging your vocal chords.
4. Go for auditions, enter competitions, and seek out casting calls
Without a manager or agent to help you at this stage in your singing career, you’ll need to find advertisements for auditions at musical theaters yourself, respond to casting calls, or find competitions to enter (such shows as American Idol or America’s Got Talent have helped several singers find fame) that could help more people hear your voice, and witness your talent.
5. Share your talent online
Nowadays, it’s possible for almost anyone to share almost anything online, but for those few who are really talented, sharing their voice on social media platforms can be a great stepping stone to a musical career. From YouTube and TikTok, to Facebook and Instagram, there are plenty of simple (and free) ways to get your voice to the masses, but with so much competition, you’ll need to hone your skills before unleashing them on the public!
6. Follow your passions and dreams
Achieving fame in the music world doesn’t usually come easy, and if you’re serious about making it big and pursuing a profitable career, you’re going to need to work hard to chase your dreams, and inevitably, prepare yourself for plenty of let downs. But, if you have enough passion and determination (and ideally, talent!), there’s no reason why you can’t make it onto the list of top singers of the world.
The music world is a crowded one, and you will need to work exceptionally hard to stand out and be heard by the right people. But, if you’ve got what it takes and are prepared to work hard to maintain your talent, there will always be room for one more if fame comes a-calling!
