The Ultimate Guide to Florida Contractors License Requirements

    By JakeFebruary 19, 2023No Comments4 Mins Read

Are you looking to become a certified contractor in Florida? If so, you’ll need to know the requirements for obtaining a contractor’s license. The license is a legal document that allows you to practice as a professional contractor in the state. You can bid and work on projects in Florida without fear of facing legal repercussions. The process for obtaining a contractor’s license can be complex and confusing. This guide will provide an overview of the Florida contractors license requirements and everything you need to know.

    Types of Contractors Licenses
The first step in becoming a certified contractor in Florida is understanding the different types of licenses available:

    1. Certified General Contractor

The most common license type is the Certified General Contractor as an Individual (CILB 5-A). This license type allows individuals to work on any residential or commercial project at most two stories or $750,000 in value.

    2. Certified Building Contractor

The second license type is the Certified Building Contractor (CILB 5-B). This license type allows individuals to work on any building project that is at most three stories or $1,000,000 in value.

    3. Certified Residential Contractor

The Certified Residential Contractor (CILB 5-C) is the third type of license. This license type allows individuals to work on any residential project that is at most one story or $500,000 in value. When it comes to residential projects, this type of license is the only option.

    Qualifications for Obtaining a License

To obtain a CILB 5-A license, applicants must meet certain qualifications. These include being at least 18 years old and passing a state certification examination. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate financial solvency by providing proof of their FICO credit score and submitting financial statements such as bank statements and tax returns. Finally, applicants must have at least four years of experience working in the trade for which they seek licensure.

How to Pass Florida CE Exam

Applicants must pass the Florida Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB) exam to obtain a Florida contractors license. The exam is a multiple-choice test with questions regarding construction law, business and finance principles, and safety regulations. In addition to studying the licensing handbook, applicants are encouraged to enroll in a state-approved review course and attend practice exams.

You can enroll with RocketCert for a comprehensive Florida construction contractor exam preparation course. The program includes study guides, practice exams, and online video lectures covering all topics on the CILB exam.

    Applying for Your License

Once you have met all the qualifications for obtaining your license, it’s time to apply! The application process begins with completing an initial licensure application form. This form can be found on the Florida website and should be completed completely and accurately before submission.

After submitting your application form, you will need to pay any applicable fees and submit additional documents, such as proof of financial solvency and transcripts from accredited college-level courses, if applicable.

Once all documents have been submitted and approved by the state licensing board, you will receive your official contractors license!

    Renewal of Florida Contractors License

You will need to renew your license every two years to keep it active. The renewal process requires paying a fee, submitting proof of continuing education credits, and completing a renewal application form.

You can find more information on the Florida contracting license requirements and the renewal process on the state’s website.

    Conclusion

Obtaining a contractor’s license in Florida is a daunting task. Still, with proper preparation, it can be done quickly and easily! By understanding the different types of licenses available, meeting all qualifications for licensure, and following all steps outlined in the application process, you can become a certified contractor in no time!
